World Oceans Day! 🌊

World Oceans Day! 🌊

The ocean is the Earth’s lungs. It produces over 50% of the oxygen we breathe. So it goes without saying, they’re pretty important!!

As well as providing oxygen, oceans also regulate the climate, support biodiversity and sustain human livelihoods and in turn, economies.

80% of the Earth’s biodiversity is housed by the ocean (1.), including mangroves. Mangroves themselves are essential for carbon absorption and coastline protection. Head to our blog which celebrates International Mangrove Day to learn more! As well as mangroves, the ocean homes coral reefs and a vast array of sea life. It’s widely known that irreversible damage to parts of the Great Barrier Reef has happened, caused by climate change and poor water quality.

Sadly, our oceans have come under threat as a whole from such causes as well as pollution, habitat destruction and dramatic decreases in ocean fish stocks (2.). These threats are now so severe, immense, (and seemingly of control), that more than 40% of the ocean has been severely affected and no area has been left untouched but humans.

As incredible as the oceans are, it’s important to remember the damage being caused and learn how we can help, so we can continue to enjoy them for all their beauty! Here’s how we at Phizz try to do our bit.

We partner with CleanHub to recover plastic waste. For each Phizz tube sold, the same weight in plastic waste is collected, recycled and prevented from entering our oceans.

So far we've kept 151,071kg of plastic out of our oceans, and we don’t plan on stopping. Due to the nature of our product, plastic has to be used in order to keep it food safe, so we make sure to combat this as much as possible; with our partner CleanHub, as well as ensuring our tubes are recyclable and widely accepted in household recycling schemes.

To honour World Oceans Day and remind us how great they can be (and therefore how important it is to help them), we asked the team what their favourite ocean memory is and what they love about it. Here’s what some of them said!
